How far a trade went: MAE and MFE

What MAE and MFE mean in the Journal, where to find them, and how they help you set stops and targets.

Before a trade had its result, it went your way and against you. The Journal keeps both for every trade: MAE, the worst it got while it was open, and MFE, the best it showed. A winner that was $60 up and closed $40 up kept two thirds of its best. A loser that was in profit first might have been worth a target.

Where to see them

  • Trades: each trade's worst on the left and its best on the right, with a small bar between them. It is the bar described next, drawn small, with a short white line where the trade closed instead of the round handle. On a wide screen they are the MAE, While open and MFE columns.

  • Press a trade. While it was open shows how far it went as a pale band, red to its worst and green to its best. On the band, the upright line is where the trade went in and the round handle is where it closed. The solid bar between them is the result, green for a winner and red for a loser, and closed above the handle gives it in dollars.

  • Dashboard: How far trades went · MAE / MFE shows Avg heat, Avg best, Kept of the best, Losers once green and Winners once red, and a column for each of your last trades, oldest on the left: a pale band, green up to its best and red down to its worst, a solid bar for its result and a short white line where it closed. A phone shows the last 30 trades, a wider screen the last 90.

How they are measured

From the prices your service saw while the position was open: its fills, and on a broker account every price in between. They are price moves, so they are before fees, and so is the result drawn with them: closed can differ from the trade's net P&L by its fees.

A simulated account has no market prices between its fills, so its MAE and MFE come from its fills alone. For a trade that went in and out, a winner's best and a loser's worst are its result. The Journal says so beside them.

A trade closed before MAE and MFE were recorded shows a dash.

Reading them

  • Many Losers once green: your trades often go your way first. A target, or a stop moved to break-even, may keep some of it.

  • Winners once red with heat close to your stop: the stop is about as tight as these trades allow.

  • A low Kept of the best: your winners give back much of what they showed.
