Instruments and contract rollover

Choose what an agent trades, how the service moves to the next contract month, and what happens as a contract nears expiry.

An agent trades one instrument, chosen by its root, such as MNQ or ES. You never pick a contract month: the service trades the current one and moves to the next around expiry. A position shows the month it is in, such as MNQZ6.

Choose the instrument

Choose it under Instrument in the agent's editor, or on a desktop under New accounts start with on the signal's page. A channel's signal usually offers just the instruments it is meant for. Your own signals offer the whole list: index, metal, energy, rate, currency, grain and crypto futures.

A new agent starts on the micro when one is offered. Check it before you switch the agent on: an NQ contract is ten times the size of an MNQ.

When the month changes

  • Around each expiry, the service moves new trades to the next month. It changes only while the market is closed, at the 17:00 New York break, so every order in a session uses the same contract.

  • It moves four days before expiry at the latest, for index futures such as MNQ.

  • Each account moves on its own. An account holding the old month keeps trading that contract, adds and exits alike, until it is flat. Its next entry then goes to the new month.

As a contract nears expiry

For index futures such as MNQ or ES:

  • From the 17:00 break four days before expiry, the old month is exit-only. On an account still holding it, a signal that would add to the position or reverse it is skipped, and Activity says expiring. Exits and close-outs still trade, and once the account is flat, its entries go to the new month.

  • A position still open three days before expiry is closed by the service itself, rather than left for your broker.

For futures that can be delivered, such as gold or Treasuries, the old month turns exit-only six days before first notice day, and a position still open three days before it is closed.

Activity warns a few days ahead, and notes each step on each account. To choose the moment yourself, close the position before the old month turns exit-only.

What else can make a signal be skipped is in Why an order was not placed.
